Invasive surgical procedures in the uterus, such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling, also slightly increase the risk of miscarriage. Just as there are many warning signs of miscarriage, there are many different types of miscarriages. We’ll discuss them in our next section. The most common symptom of a miscarriage is bleeding; bleeding during pregnancy may be referred to as a threatened abortion. Of women who seek clinical treatment for bleeding during pregnancy, about half will go on to have a miscarriage. Symptoms other than bleeding are not statistically related to miscarriage.
If you come to your doctor’s office with bleeding, the first thing she or he will want to do is to perform a pelvic exam to check whether your cervix has begun to dilate. If it has, this situation is called threatened abortion; a miscarriage will not necessarily happen, but there is a chance that it might.
